Description

Therapeutic Indications

An indication is a term used to list the condition or symptom or disease for which a medicine is prescribed or used by a patient. For example, acetaminophen or paracetamol is used by a patient for fever, or a doctor prescribes it for headache or body aches. Currently, fever, headache and body aches are indications for paracetamol. Patient should be aware of the indications of medicines used for common conditions because they can be taken over-the-counter in the sense of pharmacy without a doctor’s prescription.

Stromba is a synthetic anabolic steroid that is therapeutically used to treat hereditary angioedema with C1 inhibitor deficiency. C1 inhibitor is a protease that inhibits the complement system (part of the innate immune system), a biochemical chain of reactions that helps the body remove pathogens from the body. Stromba may help control attacks of hereditary angioedema. Stromba can be administered orally or intramuscularly.

Stromba is an artificial steroid similar to the natural steroid testosterone.

Stromba is used in the treatment of hereditary angioedema, which causes episodes of swelling of the face, limbs, genitals, bowel wall, and throat. Stromba may reduce the frequency and severity of these attacks.

Method of administration and doses

The use of anabolic steroids can be associated with serious adverse reactions, many of which are dose-related; therefore, patients should be placed on the lowest possible effective dose.

Hereditary angioedema. Dosage requirements for continuous treatment of hereditary angioedema with Stromba (anabolic steroids) should be individualised based on the patient’s clinical response. It is recommended that the patient start with 2 mg three times daily. Once a favourable initial response is obtained in terms of preventing episodes of oedema attacks, the correct ongoing dosage should be determined by reducing the dosage at one to three month intervals to a maintenance dose of 2 mg daily. Some patients can be successfully managed on an alternating 2 mg basis. Careful monitoring of patient response is indicated during the dose adjustment phase, especially if the patient has a history of respiratory tract involvement.

The prophylactic dose of Stromba (anabolic steroids) to be used prior to dental extractions or other traumatic or stressful situations has not been established and may be significantly higher.

Attacks of hereditary angioedema are generally infrequent in childhood, and the risks from Stromba administration are significantly increased. Consequently, long-term prophylactic therapy with this drug is generally not recommended in children and should only be given with due consideration of the benefits and risks.
